Across the state, aging pools and underutilized aquatic facilities are being reimagined as vibrant splash pads that offer broader accessibility, lower maintenance, and more opportunities for community enjoyment. For many municipalities, parks departments, and recreation districts, converting an existing pool into a splash pad is a smart investment that revitalizes an aging asset while creating a destination families love.

Why Convert Your Pool to a Splash Pad

Unlike traditional pools, splash pads are designed to mitigate standing water, making them welcoming to users of a wide range of ages and abilities. They encourage interactive play through spray features, water cannons, dumping buckets, ground sprays, and themed elements that create engaging experiences without the deep water of a conventional pool, which allows for a reduction in staffing.

While splash pads still require routine maintenance and seasonal winterization, they typically use less water than traditional pools, which can mean lower chemical usage and reduced operational costs. In many cases, existing recirculating or flow-through systems can be upgraded as part of the conversion, creating a more efficient aquatic amenity.

Communities also appreciate the flexibility splash pads provide. They can be integrated into existing parks, paired with playgrounds and shade structures, or designed as part of a larger aquatic destination.

Benefits Beyond the Water

Converting a pool to a splash pad isn't simply replacing one attraction with another—it's an opportunity to improve the overall visitor experience.

Splash pads can:

  • Improve accessibility for children of varying ages and abilities.
  • Reduce operational and maintenance demands compared to traditional pools.
  • Encourage family interaction and multigenerational play.
  • Extend the usable season in many climates.
  • Complement existing park amenities and nearby attractions.
  • Revitalize aging facilities without requiring a complete aquatic center replacement.

Many communities also use the renovation as an opportunity to add shade, seating, surfacing, and other site amenities that create a more welcoming destination.

Old Town Aquatic Park - Lewisville, TX

A great example of a successful pool-to-splash pad conversion is Old Town Aquatic Park in Lewisville, Texas. Faced with lifeguard shortages and declining attendance at its former aquatic facility, the City of Lewisville chose to reimagine the space as a free, family-friendly splash pad that offers an engaging water play experience without the requirement for lifeguards.

Kraftsman worked with the City of Lewisville, Kimley-Horn as the prime architect and engineer for the project, and Councilman Hunsaker as the aquatic consultant for the feasibility study and splash pad design to transform the former swimming pool into a 13,700-square-foot interactive splash pad designed to serve visitors of all ages. The renovated facility features more than 90 interactive spray elements, including ground sprays, tipping buckets, cattail features, water coils, custom rockwork with integrated boulder sprays, and other engaging water play experiences.

Designed with four distinct play zones, the splash pad features nature-inspired, above-ground play elements that invite children to explore, discover, and enjoy a variety of interactive water experiences. The park operates on a recirculated water system, combining engaging play with sustainable water management.
