Summer Starts Here: Creating Destinations for Community Fun
June 2, 2026
As summer arrives and schools close their doors for the season, parks become the center of community life. They are places where families gather, friendships are formed, and children spend their days exploring, playing, and creating memories that last a lifetime.
Today's most successful parks are more than recreational amenities—they are destinations. By combining innovative play experiences, inclusive design, and spaces that encourage connection, communities can create environments that serve residents for generations.
One project that perfectly captures this vision is Minerva-Delgado Park in Bastrop, Texas.
A New Destination for Family Fun
Minerva Delgado Park
Kraftsman was proud to partner with Bastrop Parks and Recreation on the development of four new parks throughout the community, including the vibrant Minerva Delgado Park. Designed as a destination for recreation, inclusion, and community gathering, the park brings together splash play and traditional playground experiences in one engaging space.
The colorful splash pad offers a refreshing escape from the Texas heat, featuring a variety of interactive spray elements that encourage active play and exploration. Nearby, the inclusive playground creates opportunities for children of all abilities to play side by side in a welcoming environment designed with accessibility at its core.
Thoughtfully selected features include an accessible sensory ramp, interactive play panels, musical play elements, a team swing, and poured-in-place rubber surfacing. Together, these amenities support movement, creativity, social interaction, and sensory engagement while ensuring every child has the opportunity to participate.
The result is a dynamic community destination where families can spend hours cooling off, playing together, and enjoying the outdoors throughout the summer and beyond.

What Makes a Great Summer Destination?
Offer a Variety of Experiences
Communities across the country are investing in parks that offer a variety of experiences designed to keep visitors engaged and encourage repeat visits. The most successful destinations often include:
- Splash pads that provide safe, interactive water play
- Inclusive playgrounds that welcome children of all abilities
- Shade structures that improve comfort during hot summer months
- Gathering spaces that encourage family and community interaction
- Durable surfacing and amenities designed for long-term enjoyment
When these elements work together, parks become more than places to play—they become hubs for recreation, wellness, and community connection.
The Growing Trend of Combined Play
Integration of Splash Play and Traditional Playgrounds
One of the fastest-growing trends in park design is the integration of splash play and traditional playgrounds into a single destination. By offering multiple ways to play, communities can create year-round recreation opportunities while maximizing the value of their investment.
Combined play environments appeal to a wider range of ages, interests, and abilities, encouraging longer visits and greater community engagement. Parents can supervise children enjoying different activities in one centralized location, while kids can seamlessly move between water play, climbing, swinging, and imaginative experiences.
As communities continue to prioritize inclusive and engaging recreation spaces, combined play destinations are proving to be a powerful way to strengthen community connections and enhance quality of life.
